The D7 Visa (Passive Income Visa)


For persons who can support themselves financially and have a stable recurring income from overseas, for example: income from a pension, rental property, a remote job, savings, dividends or investments, then the D7 visa is another residency option to consider and one that has proved popular, especially with pensioners and entrepreneurs.


Applicants must be able to provide evidence of a minimum overseas income to the value of €705 per month (€8,460 per annum) for a single person, and €1,057.50 per month (€12,690 per annum) for a couple (as of March 2022), plus a minimum of €8,460 (single person) or €12,690 (couple) deposited in a Portuguese bank account.


The application must be made in the individual's home country of residence via the Portuguese Consulate in that country.

 

Requirements for the application are:

  • a Portuguese taxpayer number (Número de Identificação Fiscal - NIF)
  • a Portuguese bank account
  • evidence of sufficient funds/income to be self-supporting
  • proof of health insurance, valid for 12 months
  • evidence of a clean criminal record
  • proof of accommodation in Portugal, either purchased or a 12-month rental agreement, or letter from a family member or friend stating that the individual will live with them.

Once approved by the Portuguese Consulate in the home country, the applicant will be issuedwith a temporary D7 visa valid for 4 months, allowing 2 entries into Portugal during that time. He/she will also be given an appointment to attend the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) in Portugal for the biometrics data step ie, photograph, fingerprints and signature.
 

Once approved, the residency permit card will be sent to the applicant's address in Portugal and is then valid for 2 years, after which time it can be renewed for a further 3 years. At the end of the 5-year period, the individual may apply for conversion to a permanent residency permit.

 

The D7 visa will provide the following benefits:

  • residency extended to dependent family members
  • the right to live, work and study in Portugal
  • access to Portugal' national health care system
  • favourable tax rates by registering as a non-habitual resident via the NHR tax regime eg, 10% tax rate on overseas pension and retirement schemes income for a period of 10 years
  • travel within the EU and Schengen zone countries without the requirement for a visa
  • the option to apply for permanent residency and citizenship after 5 years.
